Movies that have more of a message and/or more complex story lines are, by and large, are considered "parallel" films (what we would call independent films in the U.S.). Hindi films, now days, are made to what the public wants to see: "masala" films...a mixture of action, singing, dancing, and romance. Movies with a message, such as "My Brother...Nikhil" or "Three Walls" don't do well at the box office. But there have been some really good movies made recently with good messages.
